Device and driver errors

You can find the errors and error codes that can be reported by devices and drivers in Windows on this page, along with a cause and a solution. The error code can be found in Driver Fusion under problem code, and in Windows' Device Manager under device status.

Error code 0
CM_PROB_NO_PROBLEM

This device is working properly.

Cause

The device is working properly according to Windows, but it may still not work properly.

Solution

Install another driver using device control. You'll be asked to choose which driver you want to install. Driver Fusion includes your backed up drivers, the drivers that are present in Windows, and the drivers that we have online. You can also reinstall your current driver.

If you still have the same error, uninstall the device using device control and then scan your computer for hardware changes.

Error code 1
CM_PROB_NOT_CONFIGURED

This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

Cause

The device has no driver installed on your computer, or the driver is configured incorrectly.

Solution

CM_PROB_DEVLOADER_FAILED

Windows cannot load the driver for this device. (Code 2)

Cause

The driver may be incompatible or malfunctioning.

Solution

If you still have the same error, uninstall the device using device control and then scan your computer for hardware changes.

Error code 3
CM_PROB_OUT_OF_MEMORY

The driver for this device might be corrupted, or your system may be running low on memory or other resources. (Code 3)

Cause

The driver may be corrupted, or your computer is running out of memory.

Solution

If your computer has insufficient memory to run the driver, you can close some applications to make memory available.

Error code 9
CM_PROB_INVALID_DATA

Windows cannot identify this hardware because it does not have a valid hardware identification number. (Code 9)
For assistance, contact the hardware manufacturer.

Cause

Windows detected invalid device IDs for your device.

Solution

If you still have the same error, contact the device manufacturer. Your device may be defective.

Error code 10
CM_PROB_FAILED_START

This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.

Cause

If known, the cause is displayed in addition to the above error message.

Solution

Error code 12
CM_PROB_NORMAL_CONFLICT

This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

Cause

The BIOS or Windows assigned two devices the same interrupt, I/O ports, or Direct Memory Access channel. It's also possible that the BIOS didn't allocate enough resources to the device.

Solution

Disable the other device with the same error using device control. You can also update the BIOS of your computer, or replace the device.

Error code 14
CM_PROB_NEED_RESTART

This device cannot work properly until you restart your computer. (Code 14)

Cause

The device configuration has been changed.

Solution

Restart your computer.

CM_PROB_PARTIAL_LOG_CONF

Windows cannot identify all the resources this device uses. (Code 16)

Cause

The device is only partly configured and might need additional manual configuration of the resources the device requires.

Solution

CM_PROB_REINSTALL

Reinstall the drivers for this device. (Code 18)

Cause

The device was previously installed and needs to be reinstalled.

Error code 19
CM_PROB_REGISTRY

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Cause

The device has more than one service defined, or the driver name cannot be obtained from the registry.

Solution

Error code 21
CM_PROB_WILL_BE_REMOVED

Windows is uninstalling this device. (Code 21)

Cause

Windows is in the process of removing the device. This error is temporary and exists only until the device is completely removed.

Solution

Either wait for Windows to finish removing the device, or restart your computer.

Error code 22
CM_PROB_DISABLED

This device is disabled. (Code 22)

Cause

The device is disabled by a user or software.

Solution

Enable the device using device control.

CM_PROB_DEVICE_NOT_THERE

This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)

Cause

The device is installed incorrectly. The problem could be a hardware failure, or a new driver is needed.

CM_PROB_FAILED_INSTALL

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

Cause

The device has no drivers installed.

Error code 29
CM_PROB_HARDWARE_DISABLED

This device is disabled because the firmware of the device did not give it the required resources. (Code 29)

Cause

The device has been disabled in the BIOS.

Solution

Enable the device in the BIOS. Refer to the computer documentation, or contact its manufacturer, for instructions on how to make this change.

Error code 31
CM_PROB_FAILED_ADD

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Cause

The device cannot load the driver.

Solution

Install another driver using device control. You'll be asked to choose which driver you want to install. Driver Fusion includes your backed up drivers, the drivers that are present in Windows, and the drivers that we have online. You can also reinstall your current driver.

Error code 32
CM_PROB_DISABLED_SERVICE

A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)

Cause

The start type for the driver is set to disabled in the registry.

Solution

Error code 33
CM_PROB_TRANSLATION_FAILED

Windows cannot determine which resources are required for this device. (Code 33)

Cause

The translator that determines the kinds of resources that are required by the device has failed.

Solution

Update the BIOS of your computer.

If you still have the same error, contact the device manufacturer. Your device may be defective.

Error code 34
CM_PROB_NO_SOFTCONFIG

Windows cannot determine the settings for this device. Consult the documentation that came with this device and use the Resource tab to set the configuration. (Code 34)

Cause

The device requires manual configuration.

Solution

Refer to the device documentation, or contact its manufacturer, for instructions on how to manually configure it.

Error code 35
CM_PROB_BIOS_TABLE

Your computer's system firmware does not include enough information to properly configure and use this device. To use this device, contact your computer manufacturer to obtain a firmware or BIOS update. (Code 35)

Cause

The Multiprocessor System (MPS) table, which stores the resource assignments for the BIOS, is missing an entry for your device and must be updated.

Solution

Update the BIOS of your computer.

Error code 36
CM_PROB_IRQ_TRANSLATION_FAILED

This device is requesting a PCI interrupt but is configured for an ISA interrupt (or vice versa). Please use the computer's system setup program to reconfigure the interrupt for this device. (Code 36)

Cause

The interrupt request (IRQ) translation failed.

Solution

Change the settings for IRQ reservations in the BIOS. Refer to the computer documentation, or contact its manufacturer, for instructions on how to make this change.

Error code 37
CM_PROB_FAILED_DRIVER_ENTRY

Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)

Cause

The driver returned a failure when it started.

Solution

Error code 38
CM_PROB_DRIVER_FAILED_PRIOR_UNLOAD

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

Cause

The driver could not be loaded because a previous instance is still loaded.

Solution

Restart your computer.

Error code 39
CM_PROB_DRIVER_FAILED_LOAD

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Cause

The driver may be corrupted or missing.

Solution

CM_PROB_DRIVER_SERVICE_KEY_INVALID

Windows cannot access this hardware because its service key information in the registry is missing or recorded incorrectly. (Code 40)

Cause

Information in the registry service key for the driver is invalid.

Solution

Error code 41
CM_PROB_LEGACY_SERVICE_NO_DEVICES

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Cause

You installed a driver for a non-Plug and Play device, but Windows cannot find the device.

Solution

Error code 42
CM_PROB_DUPLICATE_DEVICE

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because there is a duplicate device already running in the system. (Code 42)

Cause

A duplicate device was detected. This occurs when a bus driver incorrectly creates two identically named sub-processes (known as a bus driver error), or when a device with a serial number is discovered in a new location before it's removed from the old location.

Solution

Restart your computer.

Error code 43
CM_PROB_FAILED_POST_START

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

Cause

The driver notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.

Solution

CM_PROB_HALTED

An application or service has shut down this hardware device. (Code 44)

Cause

The device has been shut down.

Solution

Restart your computer.

CM_PROB_PHANTOM

Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)

Cause

The device was previously connected to your computer and is no longer connected.

Solution

Reconnect the device to your computer.

Error code 46
CM_PROB_SYSTEM_SHUTDOWN

Windows cannot gain access to this hardware device because the operating system is in the process of shutting down. (Code 46)
The hardware device should work correctly next time you start your computer.

Cause

The device is not available because the system is shutting down.

Solution

Restart your computer.

Error code 47
CM_PROB_HELD_FOR_EJECT

Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)

Cause

You used "safe removal" to prepare the device for removal, or pressed a physical eject button.

Solution

Unplug the device from the computer, and then plug it back in.

If you still have the same error, restart your computer. You can also uninstall the device using device control and then scan your computer for hardware changes.

Error code 48
CM_PROB_DRIVER_BLOCKED

The driver for this device has been blocked from starting because it is known to have problems with Windows. Contact the hardware vendor for a new driver. (Code 48)

Cause

The driver has known problems with Windows.

Solution

Error code 49
CM_PROB_REGISTRY_TOO_LARGE

Windows cannot start new hardware devices because the system hive is too large (exceeds the Registry Size Limit). (Code 49)
To fix this problem, you should first try uninstalling any hardware devices that you are no longer using. If that doesn't solve the problem, then you will have to reinstall Windows.

Cause

The system hive has exceeded its maximum size and new devices cannot work until the size is reduced. The system hive is a permanent part of the registry associated with a set of files that contains information related to the configuration of the computer on which the operating system is installed.

Solution

Uninstall disconnected devices using health check.

If you still have the same error, uninstall devices you no longer need using device control.

Error code 50
CM_PROB_SETPROPERTIES_FAILED

Windows cannot apply all of the properties for this device. Device properties may include information that describes the device's capabilities and settings (such as security settings for example). (Code 50)

Cause

Windows failed to apply one or more registry properties for the device.

Solution

Error code 51
CM_PROB_WAITING_ON_DEPENDENCY

This device is currently waiting on another device or set of devices to start. (Code 51)

Cause

The device is waiting on another device.

Solution

Select the devices that the device depends on using device control. If you can determine why such a device didn't start, you might be able to resolve it.

If you still have the same error, uninstall the device using device control and then scan your computer for hardware changes.

Error code 52
CM_PROB_UNSIGNED_DRIVER

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

Cause

The driver may be unsigned or corrupted.

Solution

CM_PROB_USED_BY_DEBUGGER

This device has been reserved for use by the Windows kernel debugger for the duration of this boot session. (Code 53)

Cause

The device is reserved for use by the Windows kernel debugger.

Solution

Disable Windows kernel debugging to allow the device to start normally.

Error code 54
CM_PROB_DEVICE_RESET

This device has failed and is undergoing a reset. (Code 54)

Cause

An ACPI reset is being executed.

Solution

Restart your computer.

CM_PROB_CONSOLE_LOCKED

This device is blocked from starting while the user is not logged in. (Code 55)

Cause

The device is blocked due to a group policy.

Solution

Login with a user that is allowed to start the device, or disable the group policy.

Error code 56
CM_PROB_NEED_CLASS_CONFIG

Windows is still setting up the class configuration for this device. (Code 56)

Cause

Windows is in the process of setting up the class configuration for the device.

Solution

Either wait for Windows to finish setting up the device, or restart your computer.

CM_PROB_GUEST_ASSIGNMENT_FAILED

This device could not be assigned to a guest partition. (Code 57)

Cause

The device didn't start because of a failure during device assignment.
